Gacked from [livejournal.com profile] jennytork: List the first lines from your last twenty fics -- not necessarily in order.

Going with solo fics in order of completion and adding the second sentence in cases where the opening was a fragment....
Right, let's see: )

1. Go to page 7 (or 77) of your current WIP.
2. Go to line 7
3. Copy down the next 7 lines – sentences or paragraphs – and post them as they’re written.

I think I'll do both...
... for the GG/SGA fic )

None of the other WIPs are far enough along to qualify, so. :D
I think, btw, that contrary to poll results, I might go ahead and post this one next before a certain point in the first chapter can be Jossed. But I'll probably post a run-off poll for #100, especially since I've had a Crossed Swords bunny chew its way into the hutch (Gil, Agatha, and Tarvek stumble through a rift into the tunnels just as Hogan gets the order to evacuate Stalag 13; also featuring Papa Schultzie at his finest). And then the Baby story and "Evan the Great" will most likely be Nos. 101 and 102 in some order.

I've seen this one floating around long enough and with enough "you're tagged if you want to be" non-tags that I'm jumping on the bandwagon. :D [livejournal.com profile] jennytork asked me to tag her, and of course anyone else who wants to play is free to.

Rules: Post seven sentences from the seventh page of your current WIP.

There's only one I'm actively working on (the [livejournal.com profile] spn_cinema fic is finished), so here's from my probable [livejournal.com profile] spn_gen_bigbang fic:

Rules are, post a snippet from three of your WIPs.

1. For [livejournal.com profile] spn_cinema:
Bobby blearily looked up at him. “Wha’th’ell are you doin’ here?”

“I’m looking at a tin star with a drunk pinned on it,” John growled.

“John Winchester.” Bobby laughed drunkenly. “How ’bout that? Good ol’ John. Help me up outta here, John,” he continued, holding up his left hand.

Warily, John did so—and barely managed to dodge when Bobby took a swing at his head. Bobby followed up with a punch to John’s gut, but John’s hand landed on a metal basin and brought it down on Bobby’s skull with a resounding clang. John then dropped the basin, grabbed the front of Bobby’s sodden union suit, and pulled his left fist back for a knockdown blow.

“John!” Rufus called from behind him. “He won’t feel it.”

John suddenly realized that Bobby’s eyes were crossed and vacant. “Well, I owe him one,” he stated and let go of Bobby, who collapsed backward onto the cot like a rag doll.

2. Dinéchesters:
Once Lisa caught her breath, she quipped, “Never thought I’d be worrying about a god bleeding out on my living room couch!”

Samandiriel returned then with Gabriel and Kali in tow. “What have my idiot brothers done now?” Gabriel asked.

Dean was too busy stitching to talk, so Lisa answered. “We don’t know. All he said was that it was an ambush, that it didn’t happen here, and that it had something to do with two rivers.”

“Two rivers. That’s nice and vague.”

3. Gwaith i Innas Lain (I know I've posted the first line of this before):
Sometime in the last yén of the Sixth Age, Rúmil of Lothlórien developed the ridiculous habit of adopting pet mortals. Not literally, of course, but he did start spotting children he liked and appointing himself their guardian and fretting over their misfortunes and so on. Thranduil Oropherion tried for a good decade to dissuade him, but when even World War II failed to break him of it, Thranduil threw up his hands and settled for reminding Rúmil every so often not to try to contact his favorites. Doing so could only end badly, especially if it ended up attracting the attention of a hunter and doubly so if that hunter refused to distinguish between the faded Eldar and all the other supernatural creatures that were out there. But for the most part, Rúmil was content to watch and occasionally sing a song of comfort outside a window.

That lasted until he nearly killed a would-be rapist in Massachusetts in Seventh Age 19.

Rather than waiting around to find out whether a hunter would even take notice of the incident, Thranduil ordered his band to pack up and move. Eventually they settled in a park outside Lawrence, Kansas. Rúmil meekly confined himself to the campsite for several weeks until Thranduil admitted that he would probably have done the same thing, and after that Rúmil wandered no further than the boundaries of the park, trying very hard to keep himself from going looking for someone else to protect.

Instead, his next pet very nearly ran straight into him when his mind was elsewhere. A golden-haired girl, no more than nine years old, ran screeching down the trail at top speed, pursued by a slightly older dark-haired boy holding a garter snake, and Rúmil only just managed to dodge to the shade of a tree in time to avoid a collision. Once he’d regained his composure, Rúmil watched the children run and realized that both bore traces of Dúnedain heritage, the girl more so than the boy. But there was something else about both of them, something both beautiful and tragic, some high doom that lay upon their houses... the girl, in particular, seemed marked for an early death. Rúmil’s foresight was not particularly strong by Elven standards, but if even he could sense something like that about that girl....

He didn’t realize he was brooding until he got back to camp and Thranduil elbowed him in the ribs.

“OW!” he yelped, completely forgetting his station for a moment. “What was that for?!”

“You’ve got that look again, Marchwarden,” replied Celebmaethor. “Who is it?”

Because I have a million other things I *should* be doing, but I've seen this making the rounds again and decided to jump on the bandwagon this time. Gacked from [livejournal.com profile] quickreaver and [livejournal.com profile] amber1960.

1) Make a list of fifteen characters first, and keep it to yourself for the moment.

2) Ask your f-list to post questions in the comments. For example: "One, nine, and fifteen are chosen by a prophecy to save the world from four. Do they succeed?", "Under what circumstances might five and fourteen fall in love?", "Which character on the list would you most want on your side in a zombie invasion?"

3) After your f-list has stopped asking questions, round them up and answer them using the fifteen characters you selected beforehand, then post them.

These will probably end up working their way into the Crossed Swords Multiverse, just by virtue of the characters I've chosen. No promises, though. But I do have one stipulation: KEEP IT GEN!

So SPN Fandom has declared today a day not only to call truce on voicing displeasure at canon and (in some corners) sniping at other fans, but also to share some of the things that make us happiest about Show and its fandom. So these are a few of my favorite things:

- Sam and Dean. I love those boys so much--and probably not least because they're guys I could have gone to HS with. My HS guy friends are precious, and so are Sam and Dean.
- So are Jared and Jensen, for that matter, fabulous actors and genuinely good men.
- Though I confess I'm currently trying not to have a crush on Henry/Gil McKinney, who also seems like a good guy and is just about exactly my type. *sigh*
- Lots of other great characters to love, too, like Bobby, Charlie, Jody, Chuck, Kevin, Rufus, Gabriel, Cas... man, the list goes on and on.
- There are a ton of amazingly talented people in this fandom.
- I'm privileged to have made friends with some of them.
- And some people I was already friends with... especially [livejournal.com profile] jennytork. I mean, we get up to all kinds of shenanigans anyway, but I don't think either of us were expecting [livejournal.com profile] cazadoretx to take off like it has. (And there's another story coming as soon as I can get one gap filled in, plus others in the WIP pile....)
- Big Bangs. Especially [livejournal.com profile] spn_gen_bigbang. Talk about fun!
- The sheer scope for AUs and crossovers. I suspect I'll be hauling Sam and Dean into my other favorite shows for a long time to come.

I'm still only half-awake, but that's what I can come up with off the top of my head. :)

[livejournal.com profile] fannishliss is trying to start a meme, mainly for the entertainment and education of the Captain America fandom, but it's too much fun for me to pass up. So here goes... how well do you know these top hits from the 1930s and '40s?

BOLD the ones you know right off the bat.
Add ASTERISKS if you LOVE the song (you may also MINUS if you dislike a song that much).
Put a QUESTION MARK if it rang a bell but you'd need to look it up to be sure, or you you feel like you should know it but don't quite. I am putting a Tilde on ones I know vaguely.
UNDERLINE if you have a recording of this song (or know it super well), and ITALICIZE if it is the same performer. :)
Optional: put the year you were born and the year your older parent was born.
(I think I won't--most of this knowledge comes from my grandparents anyway.)

Fire up that time machine... )

Explains a lot, doesn't it? :D

You Are an Imaginative Thinker

You are a nonlinear thinker, and you're even surprised by the places your mind takes you.
You love to get lost in a story, whether it's your own or not. You love fantasy.

You are a positive and uplifting person. You inspire others to be better.
You are full of wonder and curiosity. You feel a strong connection to the world.

Reasonably accurate, I'd say!

[livejournal.com profile] shirebound gave me T! Leaving out all the options beginning with "The"....

Something I hate: Tyranny. Also, Twitter twits who don't remember that there are *real people* on the receiving end of their spite.
Something I love: Truth, justice, and the American Way. :D Texas, in all her glory. Time with loved ones. Tunes I can sing. Tolkien.
Somewhere I have been: Teton National Forest. (You thought I'd say Texas, didn't you? HAHA! Doesn't count 'cause I live here!) I've also been to Tennessee once, and Tomorrowland at Disney World.
Somewhere I would like to go: Hmmm... Tower of London? Tomb of the Unknown Soldier? Iunno... maybe a few more of Tolkien's houses in Oxford (I passed two of them every day when I was there for Oxbridge 2005).
Someone I know: Y'know, for all the Ts I know IRL, I know hardly any on LJ. I remember when [livejournal.com profile] hoppytoad79 went by TZA, and [livejournal.com profile] laughtersmelody over at [livejournal.com profile] christianfanfic has a first name beginning with T... but I think that's it.
Best Movie: The Two Towers is an obvious contender, but Tora! Tora! Tora! and To Hell and Back are good, too. So is Topper for comedy.

Comment if you'd like a letter!

I see the poetry meme is going around again. I really wasn't in the mood for it the other day (the only poem that came to mind was Hopkins' "Carrion Comfort," which is quite the downer), but here's one that came up today that I feel needs sharing:

A HYMN

O God of earth and altar,
Bow down and hear our cry,
Our earthly rulers falter,
Our people drift and die;
The walls of gold entomb us,
The swords of scorn divide,
Take not thy thunder from us,
But take away our pride.

From all that terror teaches,
From lies of tongue and pen,
From all the easy speeches
That comfort cruel men,
From sale and profanation
Of honour and the sword,
From sleep and from damnation,
Deliver us, good Lord.

Tie in a living tether
The prince and priest and thrall,
Bind all our lives together,
Smite us and save us all;
In ire and exultation
Aflame with faith, and free,
Lift up a living nation,
A single sword to thee.

This one started (!) by my very favorite Mumsie, [livejournal.com profile] mumstheword54:

"Giving Thanks"

Whether we're still elated or heartbroken over this year's elections; overworked or under-employed; at the peak of our health or battling physical problems -- whatever our circumstances, we have so much to be thankful for, and we need sometimes to stop and count our many blessings, then send a grateful prayer heavenward to the Lord, from whom all blessings flow.

So reply to this post, and I'll give you a letter. You may reply here and/or start your own LJ post, listing AT LEAST five things for which you are grateful.

My letter is R:

1. REDEMPTION. One of the things I've gleaned from SPN is that that universe, as messed up as it is, is a great look at what the Primary World would be like without the grace of a God who keeps His promises and has willingly paid the debt that we could never pay. We don't have to save ourselves, and we don't have to face the impossible task of trying to earn Heaven.

Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail,
In Thee do we trust, nor find Thee to fail!
Thy mercies how tender, how firm to the end,
Our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend!

Now there's something to sing about! :D

2. RIGHTS. Namely that while we might quibble over them and might not always see them correctly, at least Americans recognize that people have inherent, basic, unalienable rights and that the government's job is not to grant them but to protect them. I am beyond blessed to be an American woman with a Ph.D., a driver's license, and a voter registration card; there are way too many people in this world who'd gladly kill me for such transgressions of what they think womanhood should be. (Which is why I'm hoping to add a concealed handgun license to the list sooner than later! The Second Amendment guarantees the First, after all....)

3. RONALDUS MAGNUS. My favorite President, I think. Not only did he do a lot of good while he was in office and articulate a lot of policy ideas that I agree with, he had a great sense of humor and seemed to be a genuinely nice man. And he wasn't a bad actor, either! I haven't seen all of his movies, but I've enjoyed the ones I have seen--two of which (The Santa Fe Trail and Desperate Journey) co-starred Errol Flynn.

4. RGIII. A Heisman winner from Baylor--whodathunk?!

5. REST. Nothing like a series of panic attacks to remind you why you prefer freelancing, with all its risks, to an inflexible, overstuffed schedule....

I could go on, but I think I'll leave it there to let y'all have a go. :D

ETA: This doesn't start with an R, but it's good news all the same: C.S. Lewis is about to get a memorial in the Poets' Corner at Westminster Abbey! Now, if they'd only do the same for Tolkien....

How do these things always manage to surface while I'm working on something that has me surrounded by books?

Meme from [livejournal.com profile] nuranar:

It's international book week. The rules: Grab the closest book to you, turn to page 52, post the 5th sentence. Don't mention the title. Copy the rules as part of your post.

I'll be good and go with the book that's on the top of the stack and not the one that's open in the next tab:

"This kind of prayer pleases God greatly, for it can only spring from affection of the heart."

I've just dug myself out from under a pile of work and have lots of fic and RL stuff to catch up on, so I can't promise to keep the meme going by coming up with questions for commenters. But I did want to post my answers to the questions [livejournal.com profile] auntmo9 asked me.

Tell me you want to play and I'll pick up to three of your fandoms (a list might be helpful). Then update your journal and answer the following questions:

1. What got you into this fandom in the first place?
2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
3. Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc?
4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom?

[livejournal.com profile] nuranar gave me three, though I've shifted the order (for a good reason, as you'll see).

Stargate Atlantis
1. What got you into this fandom in the first place?
I'd caught a few eps of SG-1 here and there and enjoyed them, and ditto SGA once it spun off. But one time my dad came to visit while I was in grad school, and we happened to catch back-to-back episodes of SGA--parts 1 and 2 of "The Siege." And we both got hooked, and I got hooked all the harder thanks to [livejournal.com profile] jennytork's wonderful fanfiction.

2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
I've moved on a little already now that the show's over (can’t rewatch much because I don’t have the DVDs and subscribed only for Season 5 on Amazon Unbox), but I'm kind of hoping to work my way back to some of the stories I haven't finished writing. And of course, there's the Tok'ra Apocalypse AU.

3. Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc?
Oh, man, so many options! I think the ones I like best are suspenseful but still humorous, though some of the dramatic ones that call for serious departures for the actors ("The Shrine" and "The Queen" come to mind) are enjoyable just because the actors are so good.

4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
Fanfic, yes, but I've never gotten into any of the comms on LJ or anything.

5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom?
Definitely! It's a great series.

Supernatural
1. What got you into this fandom in the first place?
Stargate fanfic. Seriously. I met Sam and Dean in crossovers and fell for them. Then I happened to catch "The Monster at the End of This Book," loved the actors, and hated the storyline. But I kept up with what was happening through IMDb summaries until "Changing Channels," and after that... the bunnies moved in and just wouldn't leave. Horror's not my genre of choice, but I love the characters and the actors and keep watching mainly to root for a eucatastrophe in spite of the messed-up universe they're in. And I keep writing fix-its....

2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
I'll probably move on eventually... but take Sam and Dean (and maybe Bobby, Cas, and Gabe) with me.

3. Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc?
That's a hard question. There are some I enjoy just looking at (e.g., "Frontierland" and "Time after Time"--Jensen seriously needs to do more costume drama); there are some I enjoy for the humor ("Changing Channels" especially); and there are some like "Point of No Return" that I enjoy strictly for the acting--those usually have less horror and more suspense.

4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
Yup. I'm more on the gen/h/c fringe of fandom, but it seems like I've had an easier time finding a niche here.

5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom?
Mrrr. It depends on whether they're capable of finding and holding on to what's good and true (what Augustine called "Egyptian gold") in a story this tangled. Jared and Jensen are amazing, as are Sam and Dean, and the right parts of the fandom are a great community, but the story has the potential to get people turned around spiritually and/or curious about the wrong kinds of paranormal/supernatural schtuff if they aren't wary enough to draw the line between fantasy and reality.

G. K. Chesterton
1. What got you into this fandom in the first place?
We read Orthodoxy in my undergrad Oxford Christians class, which got me interested in his non-fiction. Then my friend G used my computer to record The Man Who Was Thursday for his girlfriend (now wife) because she had a long commute and needed something to keep her awake, and that got me hooked on GKC's fiction.

2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
I drift in and out, but I'll probably stay a Chesternerd.

3. Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc?
I love everything of his that I've read so far, but in terms of fiction/poetry, I think I'd vote for The Ballad of the White Horse. It’s not perfect poetically, but the way he tells the story is just amazing.

4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
Not really. I may eventually get into the more academic side of the fandom, but really, it's more a matter of GKC's ideas influencing, and sometimes getting direct references in, my writing for other fandoms.

5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom?
Definitely! Even if you don't agree with him, there's such an infectious joy to his writings, as well as plenty of food for thought.
