Run, do not walk, over to Christ and Popular Culture and check out this excellent article on why Star Trek: Into Darkness is aptly named. (I haven't seen any of the movies since Star Trek 6, but I still appreciate the insights.)

I skimmed it because I'm about to run, but yeah, I agree! And it's a really interesting continuum. Note - I grew up with TNG but never watched the following two series. The article analyzes DS9 but I think it leaves out Voyager. I wonder where it fits in.

It's a really interesting article.

Roddenberry's vision of the Federation and the future of humanity has always been one in which religion as we know it seems to be considered a relic of the past--a part of humanity's culture and heritage, but not something to really take seriously. Alien races who do take religion seriously are nearly always shown to be either primitive or duped by someone or something more "advanced".

I actually think his universe is one which would be ripe for Christian fanfic to counteract this prevailing attitude.

But the article certainly does point out a lot of this.

And the movie (I thought) was really good--better than the first of the reboot movies.
