"Your Majesties, Mr. Prime Minister, honored guests and dignitaries, I’m Dwight Eisenhower, Commander in Chief, Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Force, European Theater of Operation. Just getting the title straight is tiring enough. So I will leave much of today’s business to my trusted and gifted colleagues, brothers in arms. We are from different traditions, different services, but we are united in this crusade. We shall liberate Europe. We shall restore freedom. We shall make the world safe for democracy. There is no other cause so urgent as to bring us so far from our homes. This is our purpose. This is Operation Overlord."
--Ike: Countdown to D-Day
Somehow, that scene always sends chills down my spine....
Sixty-two years ago, at this hour, the greatest invasion force in history prepared to land in Normandy. And Hitler had taken a sleeping pill, gone to bed, and left orders not to be disturbed.
It was a mistake that would cost him his life.
(Also at this hour, in a very alternate universe, a certain Army Air Corps colonel was trying to convince several generals from New York that he had indeed met an Elf... but that's another story. ;) )
Sixty-four years ago, the Battle of Midway was raging in the South Pacific. It was an awful, bloody, costly battle, but we won, and Japan would never recover.
May we never forget.
