Is anyone else having trouble with Encyclopedia of Arda? I keep getting "Cannot find server" when I try to get to it.
And whether or not it's down, can anyone tell me where it is that the connection between Turin and Menelmacar is made? ('M trying to get somewhere on this Colonial American paper, and there's a point where I think I need to point out that the Elves figure Turin will get to come back and whup Morgoth in person.)

While I'm asking questions, here's an unrelated one for the medical folks: what would a country doctor ca. 1890 do to immobilize a sprained hip, and what kind of anti-inflammatory would be prescribed? Would the fact that the patient crashed through a window and some trees and thus has lots of cuts and bruises complicate such a prescription?

I'm afraid I can't help you at all, dear. EofA didn't work for me either, although Council of Elrond does have an encyclopedia that might help.

Surgical Steel would probably know about the medical question. Or maybe Febobe.

Hugs and brownies,
Mum

Well, I've got EoA working, and they say this:

To the Elves, this constellation had huge symbolic importance, representing an eternal guardian of the World. In the oldest tradition, The Lost Tales, Menelvagor is the enemy of the exiled Melkor, protecting Arda from his return. In later developments of the story, the stars came to represent none other than Túrin Turamabar, who was fated to return from the dead and face Melkor in the Last Battle. This tradition can be seen in the words of the Silmarillion, where Menelvagor (there called Menelmacar) 'forebodes the Last Battle that shall be at the end of days.' (3 Of the Coming of the Elves and the Captivity of Melkor).

No hint as to where the explicit link is made, but it shows that there were hints right back at the beginning (where, if I'm remembering right, it's a Vala of some description who followed Melkor up a giant tree. Yeah, the Lost Tales are odd)
