Why is it that big professional organizations charge insane amounts for membership *and* require you to be a member in order to present *and* don't give you a discount on the equally ridiculous conference registration fee if you do present? You'd think having a bigger membership base would allow them to charge less per person.

Don't mind me, just having a crabby day and not particularly relishing being a self-employed independent scholar.
