Why is it...

... that this sort of attitude is so common? And that those who have it never stop to think that a) it's generally better not to let things get that bad if it's a real possibility and b) if one lives alone, no one will know if certain emergencies do occur?
(I am thinking of specific instances, but enough of them to warrant a general harrumph.)
