So I heard on the radio Thursday that some scientist has figured out how to turn stem cells into sperm. And of course the conclusion was that, at least for some women, this development means that men are now completely unnecessary.
And it immediately made me think of this song by Die Prinzen. (Can't embed it, sorry.) It's in German, but you can probably follow it pretty well given the video. Still, here's a rough translation just in case ([livejournal.com profile] bbgreenie, correct me if I'm wrong):

Much has changed in this world,
And it's clear to me where it all comes from.
So many women nowadays are just like men,
Now I hardly recognize any difference at all.

They have money and drive faster cars;
After sex many disappear without a sound;
They make war and they sell drugs;
They are brutal on their way to the top.
They have power and play better soccer,
Write history and fly into space.

Chorus
Women are the new men,
Now I hardly recognize any difference at all.
They are like our much prettier doubles;
I ask myself why we're still around.
Women are the new men,
It's already so in almost the whole world.
They can do anything and they live longer;
I ask myself if I like this!

They have constantly deceived us,
Far more often than we have betrayed them.
They are unfaithful, they divorce sex and love,
Become generals and many master thieves.
They're brusque on the telephone;
They manage things fine all by themselves;
They want us only for our looks,
Pay the check when they go out with us!

Chorus

They drink a lot--even there they're our superiors--
Can survive alone in the wild,
Find no pleasure in monogamy,
And even sometimes... go to bed too early.

Women are the new men,
Now I hardly recognize any difference at all.
They are like our much prettier doubles;
I ask myself why we're still around.

Men are the new women,
They cry in secret and let themselves be beaten
While women now trust themselves in everything.

Women are the new men,
It's already so in almost the whole world.
They can do anything and they live longer;
I ask myself if I like this!

Women are the new men,
Now I hardly recognize any difference at all.
They are our much prettier doubles;
I ask myself why we're actually still around.

Women are the new men,
And even so I've just fallen in love again.

NB: I think it's a very bad idea and pray the scientists manage to find some ethics before they push the research any further. And no one's ever going to convince me that men are worthless or that there are no differences between the sexes--I'm all for patriarchy as long as it accounts for women's genuine abilities. I just think the song is hilarious because it's soooo true, and the video makes it even better.

I'm with you. Reeks of the Nazis to me. I mean, you just have to think how we'd feel if the tables were turned to figure THAT out.

Personally I'm not big on genetic manipulation for that reason. I mean. . .like. . .bipolar disorder. . .how do you know you aren't eradicating a certain creativity in many cases right along with the disorder? How much would the world have lost if we could have eradicated that genetically, say, 600 years ago? I don't think we have the intelligence and ethics to know what we're doing with the technology we're capable of developing. I just don't. It's playing God, and we shouldn't be messing around with it.

*snugs and gets off her soapbox*

LOL! That is hilarious, and true. It also reminds me of a Swedish song that goes along the same theme lines. I can't watch the video since I'm at work, but I'll see if I can look into it when I get home after work on Sunday.

Men always have been, and always will be, necessary. Women are not, and never will be, just like men. There are differences between the genders and the way to peace and harmony between men and women is for the world to accept that we each have strengths and weaknesses and they compliment each other, so let's regard being a housewife and mother just as valuable and as important a contribution as being a CEO or lawyer or cancer researcher. Being general, so what if women are the more empathic, emotional sex and men are more competitive and physically-motivated? Multiple tasks need to be done at once in a wide variety of areas, all requiring different talents, strengths, and gifts. Childcare is just as valid as constructing a new office building. Negotiating contracts is just as valid as designing clothing. It breaks my heart and frustrates me that society preaches that for women to be equal to men, it means we're supposed to emotionally detatch so we're just like men. Casual sex that doesn't mean anything, be blunt and brash and 'balls to the wall', go forth and kick butt and take names and all that jolly rot. Men are supposed to be *more* emotionally in touch and stop being so competitive and 'in your face'. xp Chauvinism and mysoginy and all that garbage has (surprise, surprise) warped and twisted and polluted God's original, perfectly functional and workable set-up and design. Why can't we just be who God made us to be? Not everyone can lead. Leaders need support staff or nothing would ever get done and no goals would ever be reached. Everyone, regardless of what they do, needs to be valued and the work they do treated as worthy and a contribution.
