So Mum and I were talking the other day about one of of my two favorite Christmas programs from my early elementary days, Angels Aware. It's all about the heavenly host getting the word that Jesus was being sent to Earth, and after the angels and prophets review just *why* humanity needs a Savior, Michael realizes that he forgot to ask *how* Jesus is going to Earth! So while he rushes off to find out, the angels start speculating...

If it were up to me,
I think that He should go
As some kind of great hero,
Someone everyone would know.
He would be
The greatest of all time,
The one and only of a kind,
Someone folks would stand in line to see,
If it were up to me.

But of course, that's not how God works--and *that* proves why God is God and we (and the angels) are not.

Through the years You made it clear
That the time of Christ was near,
Though the people couldn't see
What Messiah ought to be.
Though Your Word contained the plan,
They just could not understand:
Your most awesome work was done
Through the frailty of Your Son.

El Shaddai, El Shaddai,
El-Elyon na Adonai,
Age to age You're still the same,
By the power of the Name.
El Shaddai, El Shaddai,
Erkahmka na Adonai,
I will praise You 'til I die,
El Shaddai.

Of all the things I love and hate about SPN, I am perhaps most grateful for how forcefully it reminds me to give thanks that God is in control, that He does keep His promises, and that He's not a watchmaker who sits back and lets us stumble around with no reliable guidance because He knows we can blunder into doing the right thing. He has sent us exactly the Savior we need. He has sent us the Holy Spirit to comfort and guide us, though He leaves us free to choose whether to follow that guidance or not. And He might say "Let go; I'll handle this," but He'll never say, "Back off; I'm done helping you."

For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does He withhold from those whose walk is blameless. -- Ps. 84:11
He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all—how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things? -- Rom. 8:32

And really, as much as I joke about wanting to run away to Rivendell or Atlantis... I'd rather live in the world of the Myth Made Fact than in a tale constructed by a human mind. God's a better Author than we are. ♥
