I should clarify that this quote ends a paragraph discussing whether Bernard of Clairvaux was traditional in his new approach to exegesis, so his use of "eccentric" could be defined as "off-center" or other geometric synonyms. Still, as Mike Warnke says, "Weirdness is a relative concept."
And besides, it sounds so Chestertonian....
